Your regular van’s just failed its MOT. The courier you booked hasn’t shown up. Your landlord’s given you 24 hours to collect your stuff. Life happens.
Can you actually get a van in London today? Yes. But there’s a process, and knowing it helps.
The Reality of Same-Day Availability
Before 10am: You’ve got good odds. Most overnight returns are checked and ready by 9-10am. Contact us, confirm availability, get here by noon – you’re sorted.
10am-2pm: Depends what’s come back early from morning hires or what’s currently available. Still possible, but you might need flexibility on van size.
After 2pm: Challenging. Not impossible, but you’re competing against everyone who booked properly. And we need to complete vehicle checks before hiring out.
After 5pm: Very unlikely for collection. Our last same-day pickup is usually 5pm, sometimes 6pm in summer. Exception: if you’ve got a pre-existing account and we know your history.
Weekends are harder. Saturday same-day is possible until about 2pm. Sunday’s almost never viable – we’re either closed or running minimal staff.
What You Need Ready
Don’t show up hoping we’ll figure it out. Have this ready:
Essential Documents
Full UK driving licence – photocard and paper counterpart if you’ve got the old style. We’ll check the DVLA database for points and restrictions. Can’t dodge this.
Held for at least 12 months. Some companies say six months, we say twelve for same-day because there’s no time to query edge cases.
Proof of address – utility bill, council tax statement, bank statement. Dated within three months. Has to match the name on your licence exactly. Even middle initials matter.
Your mate’s house where you’re “staying for a bit” doesn’t count. Actual registered address.
Payment card – debit or credit, must be in your name. We’ll pre-authorise the deposit immediately. If it declines, conversation’s over.
Nice to Have
- National Insurance number (speeds up the digital ID checks)
- Second form of ID (passport, especially if your licence is old-style)
- Proof of insurance if you’re using your own cover (rare, but some business users do)
Phone vs Online for Same-Day
Book online if it shows availability. Our real-time system’s accurate. If it says a van’s free, it’s free. Confirm, pay deposit, collect.
Call us if:
- Nothing shows available but you’re desperate
- You need it in the next two hours
- You want a specific van type (refrigerated, tail lift, etc.)
- You’re outside normal hours
When you call, tell us:
- What size van you need
- When you need collection
- How long you need it
Our team will check what’s physically on site versus what’s showing online. Sometimes there’s a lag.
Collection Points and Timing
We operate from multiple locations across London. Most same-day pickups happen from our main depot, which is where the majority of our fleet’s based. Check our locations for specific collection points.
Standard opening hours are 7am-7pm weekdays, 8am-4pm Saturdays. If you need collection outside these times, contact us – we can sometimes accommodate early or late pickups for urgent situations.
What Happens at Collection
Assuming you called ahead and confirmed:
15-20 minutes total if everything’s straightforward. That’s:
- Verify documents (5 mins)
- Payment and pre-auth (3 mins)
- Damage inspection walk-around (7 mins)
- Controls briefing (5 mins)
First-time hirers take longer. If you’ve never driven a Luton, add ten minutes while we walk you through mirrors, height warnings, and general operation.
Busy periods (Friday afternoon, Saturday morning)? Add wait time. We’re not a car hire with 50 staff. More like 6-8 people processing everyone.
The Triage Call: What We’re Actually Asking
When you call for same-day, here’s what we need to know (and why):
“What’s the job?” – Tells us if you need LWB, Luton, refrigerated, tail lift. Saves time vs guessing.
“Where are you collecting from and how soon?” – Logistics. Can you get to us within the window we’ve got available?
“Have you hired from us before?” – Previous customer? Paperwork’s faster. New customer? Factor in extra ten minutes.
“Is your licence clean?” – More than six points or any serious endorsements (DR codes, DD codes) might need manager approval. Takes time we might not have.
We’re not being nosy. We’re working out if this is actually doable today.
Common Same-Day Scenarios
The House Move Emergency
Booked a man-and-van service, they’ve cancelled on you at 8am, you need to be out by 5pm.
What usually works: LWB van, collected by 11am, gives you six hours to load, move, unload. Tight but doable if you’re organised and local.
What doesn’t work: Expecting a Luton with tail lift at 2pm. We’ll try, but you’re gambling.
Business Delivery Crisis
Van’s broken down, you’ve got stock that needs delivering across London today.
What usually works: Small/medium van swapped quickly. If you’re account customer, we can sometimes do direct swap – bring the dead van in, take ours out. Less paperwork.
What doesn’t work: Custom specifications. “Needs roof bars” or “must have ply lining” – we’ll do our best but can’t promise.
Last-Minute Trade Job
Just won a tender, starting tomorrow, need tools and materials shifted.
What usually works: Taking what’s available vs what you want. Asked for LWB, we’ve got MWB? Make it work or do two trips.
What doesn’t work: Complex requirements (dual cab, specific load height, etc.). Same-day’s about problem-solving, not perfection.
Pricing for Same-Day Hire
No, we don’t charge extra for same-day. The daily rate’s the daily rate.
What you might pay more for:
- Out-of-hours collection (before 7am, after 7pm) – £25-£50 surcharge if we can even do it
- Premium insurance – because you’re stressed and rushing, maybe smart to take reduced excess
- Weekend rate – if today’s a Friday and you’re keeping it through Sunday
But the base van hire? Same price as booking a week ahead.
What Reduces Your Chances
Multiple penalty points – six or more needs a senior manager to approve, they might not be in.
Under 25 – insurance is trickier to arrange quickly, system sometimes flags for manual review.
Paying cash – we don’t take it. Card only, pre-authorisation required.
Vague requirements – “need a big van for stuff” doesn’t help us help you. Know your dimensions.
Address mismatches – your licence says Croydon, your bank statement says Romford, your utility bill says you’re in Birmingham. That’s a fraud flag. Might still work out but it’ll take time.
Alternative: Booking for Tomorrow
If it’s 4pm and you’re calling for same-day, hear me out – book for 7am tomorrow instead.
Benefits:
- Guaranteed availability (you can see exactly what’s free)
- Better choice of van size
- Cheaper sometimes (you can grab an online discount code)
- Less stressful collection process
- You can sort documents tonight vs rushing now
Unless you absolutely need it in the next three hours, next-day’s nearly as good and removes a lot of headaches.
The “I’m Already Here” Problem
Don’t just show up. Seriously.
We get people who rock up at the depot “hoping something’s available” without calling. Sometimes we’ve got a van. Often we don’t, or we’ve got one but it’s booked for collection in 30 minutes and we’re not rearranging that.
Five-minute phone call saves everyone wasted time. And if you’re coming from south London in Friday traffic, that’s an hour round trip you didn’t need to make.
When Same-Day Just Isn’t Happening
August bank holiday weekend? Christmas week? FA Cup final day at Wembley?
Some days everything’s booked. We’re a decent-sized operation, but peak demand days fill up fast.
In that scenario:
- Try booking for next-day instead
- Contact us to check if any early returns are expected
- Ask about our partner network if we’re completely full
We’ll always try to help, even if it means pointing you towards another reputable hire company.
Our Same-Day Success Rate
About 70% of same-day requests we can fulfil if you contact us before noon. After 2pm it drops to around 30-40%.
Most fails are because people want specific things we can’t guarantee on short notice – specific van models, particular colours, or additional equipment.
If you’re flexible on the exact van and realistic about timing, your odds are good.
Check our real-time availability or get in touch if you’re genuinely stuck today. We’ll tell you straight whether it’s possible.
Bottom Line
Same-day van hire in London works if you call early, have documents ready, and stay flexible.
The earlier you call, the better. Genuinely urgent? Don’t mess about with online forms, just phone us. If we can help, we will.
And if we can’t? We’ll tell you who might be able to. We’ve all had emergencies. No point being precious about it.
